Review the instructions
How to write a précis.
No more than one page, single spaced, 12 pt. font.
A précis summarizes the author’s overall argument (thesis) and shows the logical thread of the argument and the supports provided. An effective précis will show the major contributions of the work to the field, or how the author has managed to differentiate his or her topic from others. This is what makes the work “unique” and thus, publishable. A précis should never be more than one page in length (single spaced) as it is a useful tool for graduate students in remembering the specific arguments of a particular author – both in writing seminar papers and in studying for the comprehensive exam. Remember, the précis is meant to offer a summary and should not contain quotes from the work itself.
